You stayed in the job you wanted to leave. You skipped the holiday. Every month, you put something aside for the same dream:

Next year, I will finally move abroad.

Then the headlines arrive. Tougher borders. Stricter immigration. More checks.

Suddenly, you wonder whether the future you have been saving for is still available.

Moving to Europe in 2027 can still be realistic.

But your chances depend on a specific country, a legal route and your ability to meet its requirements. Border changes do not affect every applicant in the same way.

Before changing your plans, understand which rules actually apply to you.

What is changing at Europe’s borders in 2026?

New asylum rules do not close every relocation route

The EU Pact on Migration and Asylum entered into application in June 2026. It introduces stronger screening, revised asylum procedures and changes to migration management.

These measures particularly concern asylum and irregular migration. They do not establish a blanket ban on international students, qualifying workers or family migration. home-affairs.ec.europa.eu

For an Indonesian applying through employment, the relevant question is whether the job and applicant meet the destination’s work-permit requirements.

When someone says “Europe is closing,” ask them which rule affects your particular application.

EES changes how short visits are recorded

The Entry/Exit System, or EES, became fully operational on 10 April 2026. It digitally registers relevant non-EU travellers making short stays, including biometric information. Long-stay visa and residence-permit holders are among the exempt categories. www.eulisa.europa.eu

Know which status you will use to enter. A tourist visit and arrival to begin authorised employment are different situations.

ETIAS does not replace Indonesia’s visa requirement

Official guidance schedules ETIAS to begin in the last quarter of 2026; check the launch arrangements before travelling.

ETIAS concerns eligible visa-exempt visitors. Ordinary Indonesian passport holders remain subject to Schengen visa requirements for relevant short visits. www.consilium.europa.eu

It is not a new route to employment or permanent residence.

Can Indonesians still move to Europe for work?

Legal employment routes remain available to qualifying applicants. Germany’s EU Blue Card is one example.

For 2026, its standard minimum gross annual salary is €50,700. A lower threshold of €45,934.20 applies to qualifying shortage occupations and certain other eligible applicants, subject to conditions and approvals. Qualifications, the job offer and any required professional licence also matter.

These are 2026 amounts. Check the annually updated thresholds for a 2027 application. www.make-it-in-germany.com

Germany also offers an Opportunity Card for eligible jobseekers. Qualification and financial requirements apply, and permission to search does not guarantee employment. www.make-it-in-germany.com

Before spending money, establish the exact route, whether your credentials qualify and what evidence an employer must provide.

What about moving to the United Kingdom?

The United Kingdom operates a separate immigration system.

Its Skilled Worker route generally requires an eligible job with an approved employer. The usual salary requirement is the higher of £41,700 annually or the occupation’s going rate, with exceptions and separate provisions for some applicants and roles. www.gov.uk

An employer’s willingness to hire you is therefore only part of the assessment.

Investigate permission to enter, renewal conditions and eventual settlement separately. Check whether any reported policy change is a proposal or a published rule already applying to your circumstances.

Is studying in Europe still a realistic strategy?

Studying can support your goals when the programme, cost and career prospects fit your situation.

Before borrowing money, investigate what happens after graduation. Which residence options are available? What employment would qualify? Will employers expect the local language or professional recognition?

An English-taught degree may suit your education while the jobs you want require additional preparation.

Getting admitted is one milestone. Building an affordable life afterwards requires its own plan.

Include a scenario in which you do not secure qualifying employment, so you understand the financial consequences before committing.

How much should you save for a 2027 move?

Build a destination-specific budget covering preparation, applications and life after arrival.

Language examinations, qualification assessments, translations and document legalisation may cost money before you receive a visa. Flights, temporary accommodation and a housing deposit add further expenses.

Then calculate rent, food, transport and appropriate health coverage for the period before reliable income begins.

Keep a reserve for delays and a possible return. Avoid counting the same funds twice when money shown as maintenance evidence will also support your living costs.

For families, verify each person’s status and the partner’s work rights before assuming a second income.

How do you know whether your plan is realistic?

You should be able to name the destination and immigration route, explain which requirements you meet and identify what is missing.

A friend’s successful move does not establish your eligibility. They may have used another passport, an earlier rule or a different visa category.

Use official requirements to guide your next steps. If your main obstacle is language, qualification recognition or a suitable job offer, work on that before committing heavily to the move.

Recheck financial thresholds, fees and application conditions close to submission.

FAQ: Moving to Europe in 2027

Is Europe banning all immigration?

No blanket ban follows from the EU migration pact. Legal routes such as Germany’s EU Blue Card remain available to eligible applicants. home-affairs.ec.europa.eu

Can Indonesians use ETIAS instead of a Schengen visa?

Ordinary Indonesian passport holders remain subject to Schengen visa requirements. ETIAS concerns eligible visa-exempt travellers. www.consilium.europa.eu

Can I relocate using a tourist visa?

A Schengen short-stay visa is not general permission to live or work permanently. Investigate the appropriate national residence route. www.consilium.europa.eu

Which European country is easiest to move to?

The answer depends on your qualifications, language, finances and family circumstances. Compare routes against your profile.

Should I rush before rules change?

Apply when you qualify and have the evidence. Act on relevant official deadlines, rather than general pressure to pay immediately.
